Subsea Cables – December 24

By November 29, 2024December 13th, 2024No Comments

Subsea cables known as submarine communications cables or undersea cables are fiber-optic cables that are laid on the ocean floor.   Each subsea cable holds multiple optical fibers which are thin strands of glass or plastic.  Over long distances, data is carried as light signals with little loss.

More than 95% of data that moves around the world traverses subsea cables.  These cables process data between continents.  In Australia, we heavily utilise subsea cables as they are the backbone of the Internet.

A unique client of Focus Networks located in the Indian Ocean directly relies on a subsea cable.  Satellite links do offer Internet redundancy if the subsea fails as Internet connectivity is crucial to its business operations.
